Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Independence Hall was constructed between 1732 and 1756 as the State House of the Province of Pennsylvania, and was the birthplace of the concept for a United States of America. It was designed by lawyer, Andrew Hamilton, and is considered a fine example of Georgian architecture. In the Assembly Room of the Hall, the Second Continental Congress appointed Washington commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, in 1775. Also in that room, the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776 and the Constitution was written in 1787. The building has been restored wherever possible to its original late 18th century appearance. Independence Hall is designated a World Heritage Site.
